    What is a cataract?

A cataract is a disease where a gradual clouding develops in the lens of the eye. At the age of 65 the clouding of the lens is seen in up to 50 % of the population and for people over the age of 75 up to 70 % population is affected by cataract. The pathogenesis of cataract formation has a multifactorial character. There is a chemical change of lens proteins. The weight of the lens and its anteroposterior dimension increases while accommodative ability (the ability to focus) decreases.
